Face ID vs Touch ID
Apple's new method for unlocking the iPhone X, called Face ID, certainly raised some eyebrows. Is it secure? Is it necessary? And is really going to be as convenient, if not more so, than unlocking the phone with your fingerprint?
This is perhaps the stickiest sticking point: Touch ID has a proven ability to quickly and conveniently unlock the phone. With the home button completely gone on Apple's most premium phone, you'll be completely reliant on Face ID. Apple thinks you won't miss it one bit.
I haven't yet had a chance to try Face ID, so I don't know every nuance of Apple's creation, and even at the iPhone X launch event, the closest we ever came was Apple staff demonstrating the feature.
Apple's Face ID may be untested, but I have extensively tested unlocking mechanisms that use your face, from the Lumia 950's iris unlocking to Samsung phones' iris scanning and facial recognition (which scans your face Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus and Galaxy Note 8.
Here are the problems that repeatedly come up: compared to using a really good fingerprint reader, iris scanning of the past hasn't always been as accurate, speedy or dependable. Those concerns naturally spill over to Face ID. And with just a passcode pin as your backup, any time Face ID fails is a time you're punching in that pin.
Of course, we'll give Face ID a fair shake when the iPhone X comes out -- it might convince us that face scanning is the best thing since, well, since Touch ID. And when we do finally go eye-to-eye with Face ID, here's are the five things we'll be paying attention to.
1. Face ID must be easy to trigger, and easy on the arms

Where I hold a phone and scan a phone are about 11 inches apart. Your delta may vary based on your height.

If you're like me, you keep your phone nearby pretty much all the time, often lying face-up on some sort of surface, like a table or desk. The current set of iPhones -- and even the newly-announced iPhone 8 and 8 Plus -- will unlock easily with your thumb, without you having to do much lifting.
If you take any other phone with a home button out of your pocket or purse, you can pretty much unlock it by the time you're ready to read the screen. That goes double for recent iPhones with Touch ID 2, which is lightning fast.
On the phones I've tested with iris scanning, that stops being the case the second you unlock it with your face. Unless you're leaning over it, until your eyes hit the target, you wind up raising it higher than you would normally hold your phone (exception: when you're taking a photo), just to bring it back down again.
A coworker helped me measure the distance between where I comfortably hold the Galaxy S8 and where I hold the Galaxy Note 8 to use iris unlock (both phones have it, by the way). It was about an 11-inch difference, give or take
How many times do you unlock your phone in a day? A dozen? More? How about in a week? Imagine lifting the phone each time to do so, imagine all that wasted movement.
Apple's SVP of software, Craig Federighi, noted to Tech Crunch that you can also angle the phone to fit in your eye, nose and mouth, the three elements Face ID needs to work. The video Apple used to explain Face ID suggests that the feature is forgiving, that you'll barely have to position yourself to make it work at all. If that's true, it'll go a long way to making Face ID a convincing Touch ID alternative. If not, get ready for some pissed-off people.
2. Face ID will have to be fast and accurate
Iris scanning is almost instantaneous when it works the first time, but even if Face ID is just as rapid or even faster, it still takes longer to lift your arm up and bring it back down again than it does to press your thumb on a device that's already in your hand.
Face ID's additional challenge is that the second generation of Touch ID (which launched on the iPhone 6S) is so quick and convenient, you hardly know it's there. But even if Face ID is perfectly fast and reliably works every time, it essentially turns Touch ID's one-step unlocking process into as many as three steps.
With Touch ID, touching fingerprint sensor simultaneously:
Wakes the iPhone
Unlocks the iPhone
Gets phone to home screen (if you disable the default "click to unlock" setting)
Unlocks the iPhone
Gets phone to home screen (if you disable the default "click to unlock" setting)
...all in a fraction of a second.
With Face ID, you seem to have to:
Wake the iPhone by raising it or tapping the screen
Position the phone (or you) so it can scan your face
Swipe to get to the home screen after you unlock the phone (it appears to unlock to the notifications shade)

Why so many steps? Because the phone isn't always watching you, presumably to save battery life. It'd be wonderful if the iPhone X has an option or you to unlock straight to the home screen or the last app you used, if that's how you prefer it.
Apple didn't respond to a request for clarification on that issue.

Apple to offer 32GB of desktop RAM in top-end 2017 MacBook Pro, 16GB for 12" MacBook
Answering the call of professional users, Apple is predicted to offer a high-end MacBook Pro model in 2017 with up to 32 gigabytes of —potentially desktop-class —RAM, while bumping 12-inch MacBook to 16GB of RAM.
In a note to investors obtained by AppleInsider on Monday, KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says he expects Apple's 2017 laptop line to focus on internal component updates, notably platform-wide adoption of Intel's Kaby Lake architecture.
Of interest to professionals, Apple is predicted to start manufacture of a 15-inch MacBook Pro with up to 32GB of RAM in the fourth quarter, double the memory allotment of current top-of-the-line models. Kuo speculates the company will be forced to adopt desktop RAM due to restrictions of current memory system designs.
Apple took flak in releasing its latest MacBook Pro with Touch Bar models with a hard memory cap of 16GB, an minimal allotment viewed as a negative for imaging and video professionals. Responding to customer criticism, Apple said the move was made in a bid to maximize battery life.
On more than one occasion, SVP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller defended the decision to limit RAM allotments to 16GB, saying higher amounts would require a power-hungry memory controller unsuitable for use in portable machines.
"The MacBook Pro uses 16GB of very fast LPDDR memory, up to 2133MHz," Schiller said in November. "To support 32GB of memory would require using DDR memory that is not low power and also require a different design of the logic board which might reduce space for batteries. Both factors would reduce battery life."
Essentially, the Intel Skylake CPUs used in Apple's MacBook Pro only support up to 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM at 2133MHz. Though Intel does make processors capable of addressing more than 16GB of memory, those particular chipsets rely on less efficient DDR4 RAM and are usually deployed in desktops with access to dedicated mains power.
In order to achieve high memory allotments and keep unplugged battery life performance on par with existing MacBook Pro models, Apple will need to move to an emerging memory technology like LPDDR4 or DDR4L. Such hardware is on track for release later this year.
Beyond the high-end 15-inch model, Kuo expects Apple to start production of new 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros in the third quarter of 2017.
As for the 12-inch MacBook, Kuo believes next-generation versions of the thin-and-light will enter mass production in the second quarter with the same basic design aesthetic introduced in 2015. New for 2017 is a 16GB memory option that will make an appearance thanks to Intel's new processor class.
Debuted in 2015, the MacBook thin-and-light has for its short lifetime maxed out at 8GB of RAM, limiting its utility as a professional machine.
On MacBook sales, Kuo blames unforeseen production delays for Apple's poor year-over-year performance in 2016. Recent statistics from market research firm Gartner showed Mac shipments slump 8.7 percent for the year, the worst result from a top-five PC vendor.
According to Kuo, Apple has rectified supply chain bottlenecks and is on scheduled to return Mac to growth in 2017. Further, channel checks reveal replacement demand for MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is better than expected despite carrying a hefty price premium, the analyst says. To keep up with demand, capacity has been expanded by 50 percent.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar, however, is not faring as well. Kuo believes Apple will apply deep discounts to boost shipments later this year as it looks to the low-end pro model as a replacement for the 13-inch MacBook Air.

Latest iPhone 8 Leak Confirms 'Essential' Feature Upgrade
You’ve heard the news, the ‘iPhone 8’ is meant to be revolutionary: an ‘All glass’ OLED display, a forged steel chassis and it is getting bigger. But Apple AAPL -0.18% is also addressing an important practical shortcoming of the iPhone 7…
According to a report from the usually reliable Korea Herald, “multiple sources” can “confirm” the 2017 iPhones (currently both iPhone 7S and iPhone 8 models are expected) will have upgraded IP68 water and dust resistance ratings. This means the phones could withstand full submersion in up to 1.5 metres of water for up to 30 minutes.
This is a step up from the current IP67 rating on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus which can survive for the same time but only in one metre of water. This change sounds useful, but I’d argue it is actually essential.
Why? Because Apple’s big justification for removing the headphone jack is it freed up space for a larger battery and was “essential” to make the phones IP67 water resistant. Except this doesn’t (if you’ll pardon the pun) wash.
As it turned out, the iPhone 7 has a battery barely bigger than the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S7 already has IP68 water resistance despite keeping the headphone jack.
So no, this won’t stop me calling out Apple on what the “courageous” removal of the headphone jack really was “essential” for (self serving at best, deliberately misinformative at worst), but at least there is tangible progress now.
Furthermore, given all the headline upgrades the iPhone 8 is expected to have (and it will need them with Samsung’s leaked Galaxy S8 reinvention) that’s a win.
